Book Review

This books has a lot of emotions in it. Every time I read it (and I have read it several different times throughout my life) it always brings out different emotions. The characterization and storyline are intertwined beautifully. I would put in the genre of a coming of age type of story where Sal must grow up and learn to live her life even if that means without her mother. Even though later in the story, there is more death, there is a sense of the full circle of life. Sal’s grandmother had to travel with her as a guide to make sure she got to her mother’s grave. The overdramatic personality of Phoebe gives comic relief but also helps Sal to look beneath the surface and not always assume. The possibilities are endless when it comes to lesson plans. There a lot of takeaways that students can get from this book. I would gear it more towards 7th grade just because of the death, losing a baby, and other tragic events.
