Esperanza Rising

Esperanza Rising - Pam Munoz Ryan

No Lexile given

Summary - Esperanza is not sure where her family’s true home is, the one that she left behind in Mexico, or the one that she now has in the US, with her family and sick mother. She is asked to grow up young, and to give up her lavish lifestyle after a fire blazes through her home in Mexico, but Esperanza is determined to not let it get to her. The book uses the spanish language to enhance the contrast between Mexico and the US and the struggles that Esperanza faces.

Book Review - Honestly all I could say about this book is wow. There are so many different aspects of colliding cultures and serious themes that are delivered in a beautiful way. The books use of spanish throughout makes it appealing to ELLs because it has some familiar wording and also has themes of family connection, and immigration.

Activity - Students will create a bilingual dictionary from terms used in the book as well as other words that they think would be helpful to know if they went to a spanish speaking country.
