The Mostly True Adventues of Homer P. Figg

What different perceptions might adults and children have of the book? What might you say to a child reader to spur interest in reading this book? How would you use this book with children? Is this a book children should read on their own (or only in a guided reading situation, like a book discussion group)? Explain.

First, this book is truly captivating and I believe a must-read for children.  I think many children could relate to some of the hardships Homer and his brother faced living with their abusive uncle and losing their parents.  This book would be perfect to use in a small group setting.  It is the perfect supplement to a Social Studies unit on the Civil War which would hopefully spark the students’ interests.  Homer finds himself in a number of uncomfortable and potentially life-threatening situations.  There are a number of themes that could be discussed in a small group as well as “what would you do?” questions.  I believe adults would view this more from a historical perspective whereas children would experience the book through the eyes of Homer.
