Poems to Learn by Heart by Caroline Kennedy

In this poetry anthology, author Caroline Kennedy has compiled
heartwarming and inspiring poems for children. The book contains passages from
The Metamorphoses and the Bible, along with other pieces like with "Baby
Ate a Microchip" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee.”
For this learning activity, students will be put into groups and
given a poem from the book. They will then work to annotate and summarize their
respective poems before presenting their findings to the class.
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.10 By the end of the year, read and
comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6-8
text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end
of the range.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.6.1 Engage effectively in a range of
collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse
partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and
expressing their own clearly.
Goal: Students will be able to identify key messages and concepts
when presented with a poem to analyze.
Objectives: Students will work collaboratively to annotate and summarize
a poem from Poems to Learn by Heart.
Students will be able to orally present their findings to the
class.
Outcome: Students will develop a deeper understanding of how to
pare down and closely discuss a poem.
