(courtesy of amazon.com) Title: Out of the Dust Author: Karen Hesse Lexile: 1040L Genre: Historical fiction, Verse Awards: Newbery Medal Summary: Out of the Dust is a fictional account of a young girl growing up in the hardships of the dust bowl told in verse. Beautifully written and incredibly poignant, Billie Jo is a courageous narrator. The art piece should incorporate the poem as well as the student's interpretation through visuals of the poem's meaning. Learning Standard: CCELA, Reading Literature, Grade 6: Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. CCELA, Craft and Structure, Grade 6: Analyze how a particular sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot. Learning Objective: (S) Students will create an original college that describes a character, setting, or the emotions of the story using a specific poem found in Out of the Dust. (A) Students will identify specific emotions from the poem selected to translate into as visuals into their colleges. Learning Goals: Students will understand how poems can describe events with inference. Students understanding of the emotional journey of the characters will inform the creation of their collage. Learning Outcome: Students will effectively use inference in building original collages.

Poems to Learn by Heart by Caroline Kennedy

In this poetry anthology, author Caroline Kennedy has compiled heartwarming and inspiring poems for children. The book contains passages from The Metamorphoses and the Bible, along with other pieces like with "Baby Ate a Microchip" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee.”

For this learning activity, students will be put into groups and given a poem from the book. They will then work to annotate and summarize their respective poems before presenting their findings to the class.

Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.6.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

Goal: Students will be able to identify key messages and concepts when presented with a poem to analyze.

Objectives: Students will work collaboratively to annotate and summarize a poem from Poems to Learn by Heart.

Students will be able to orally present their findings to the class.

Outcome: Students will develop a deeper understanding of how to pare down and closely discuss a poem.
