Story Hour

In this text, two bears are seeking shelter by offering the other animals for shelter in exchange for tea. Unfortunately, the families that they encounter and unwilling to offer the bears shelter. In a turn of events, a fox family’s home is threatened to collapse from the snow. The fox family seeks to find shelter elsewhere and is able to gain the kindness of the two bears. They work together and are able to make shelter and share resources in order to safely survive the storm.

3.     Setting the scene:
· Winter backdrop
·  music/sounds of snow and wind
   
4.     Get into character:
     ·      Gestures that will help convey how cold winter can be when students are outside
5.     Props:
·      do-it-yourself hand puppets (e.g. bear, fox, etc.)
·      winter clothing (e.g. scarf, hat, gloves) to show students and ask questions
6.     Telling the Story:
      ·      use gestures
      ·      ask relevant questions to keep students engaged in the story and the learning activity, as  
          well as the program as a whole
      ·      use pauses when appropriate
      ·      use props to enhance the story

8.     Craft/Activity (including learning standard, goal, objective and outcomes):
Learning Activity:

During this Story Hour at the public library, will participate in a winter themed program. One component of the learning activity will consist of learning about the weather and what occurs in winter, including snow. There will be a read aloud of the book titled Shelter by: Céline Claire and Qin Leng. This story will allow students to learn how it is important to prepare for winter weather. A brief discussion on ways to prepare for winter will occur
           
Another component of the learning activity will consist of the incorporation of music by students/participants utilizing rhythm sticks to make a beat during the singing along of the following songs: Jingle Bells and Let It Snow, Let It Snow. Parents will assist with the instruction and engaging of their children in making a beat with these tools.

Students will focus on creating a mini snow globe from the following supplies: recycled food jars, water, glitter and super glue. Students will have assistance from their parents, especially in utilizing the glue to attach the object to the jar’s lid.

Learning Standard:

             “Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.”  
             (Reading Standards for Pre-Kindergarten)

Learning Goal:

Students will learn the basic principles of the weather and how to prepare for snow  with include wearing clothing warm clothing.

Learning Objective: 

Students will identify the basic principles of weather and describe some possible effects of the snow, which is shown by the bears’ needs to find a warm place and the fox   family’s need to find another shelter, in the text titled Shelter by: Céline Claire and Qin Leng.
 
Learning Outcome

Students will obtain basic knowledge about snow and some of the causes and effects, shown the group reading of the text titled Shelter by: Céline Claire and Qin Leng
