Students will work in groups and pick certain aspects of Egyptian culture to research.
Using non-fiction books, students will gather facts and create a poster to present to the
class. The group will choose what part of culture they will focus on, for example,
burials, religion, food, royalty structure, etc. As a class, we will brainstorm ideas that
make up a culture before students break away into groups and choose.

Nonfiction Alignment 1
Heinrichs, Ann. Egypt. Childrens Press, 1997.
980L
Rationale - Students can use this to research certain topics that relate to Egyptian
culture. The time period in relation to the historical fiction book is primarily in the first
half of the book. It goes in depth on certain topics that would help groups gather
material for their presentation.

Nonfiction Alignment 2
Stanley, Diane, and Peter Vennema. Cleopatra. Morrow Junior Books, 1994.
1000L
Rationale - This book gives an overlook of Cleopatra herself. It starts with beginning
of her journey in Egypt and goes through her life with the Romans. Even though it
does not give many facts about Egyptian life, it is a great nonfiction book to see what
happened in Cleopatra’s life.

Nonfiction Alignment 3
Harpur, James. Pyramid. Barnes & Noble Books, 1997.
850L
Rationale - Students who are focusing on pyramids in Ancient Egypt will be able to
gain information from this book. The book goes through the process of building and
what the pyramids are for. It does also touch on other cultures as well even though
they are not required to be used for the presentation.

Nonfiction Alignment 4
Nardo, Don. Ancient Egypt. KidHaven Press, 2002.
980L
Rationale: Students can research basic facts about Ancient Egypt. The book
introduces many aspects of the culture that the students can use to find one focal
point for their presentation.
