Title: A Greyhound, A Groundhog
Author:  Emily Jenkins, Illustrated by Chris Appelhans
Lexile Level: AD200L
Grade Level:  Preschool – 2nd grade
Age Range: 3 to 7 years
ISBN #: 0553498053
A Greyhound, A Groundhog is about two animals, a greyhound dog and a brown groundhog,
who meet in the woods and begin to play together. As they play, they begin to twirl around
and get tangled up together. The text twirls around with the animals as it describes their
play and description becomes more tangled with the animals as the story continues.  This
is a fun book to read and children will want it read to them often (maybe too often)!

Lesson for 2nd graders:
This book will be combined with a lesson about Groundhog Day. I will tell the students a little
about the book I am going to read to them. Then, I will do a PowerPoint lesson about what a
groundhog is, what it looks like, and what it does. Also, I will discuss what Groundhog Day
is and why we celebrate it. Students will listen to the book, A Greyhound, A Groundhog, be
read to them. Then students will write a 2-page journal entry about what their perfect play day
would be like; who would they be with, what would they do, where would they go, how does
this day make them feel? Students will then paint a picture of their perfect play day and submit
it with their journal entry.

Learning Standards:
Common Core ELA Writing Standards K-5 (Grade 2).

2.2. Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and
definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.

author or theme studied in class, with support as needed.

Learning Goal:
Students will express themselves through a journal entry after engaging in a PowerPoint
lesson about Groundhog Day and listening to a reading of A Greyhound, A Groundhog
by Emily Jenkins.

Learning Objectives:
1. Students will integrate the PowerPoint lesson about Groundhog Day with the story
A Greyhound, A Groundhog through writing their journal entry. (Cognitive)
2. Through their journal entry, students will describe their perfect play day and how that
day makes them feel. (Affective)
3. Students will use their writing skills through a journal entry expressing their perfect
play day. (Psychomotor)
Learning Outcome:
Students will use their writing skills to express their emotions through a journal entry
describing their perfect play day after listening to the reading and the PowerPoint lesson.
