Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of John J. Harvey by Maria Kalman

Title: Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of John J. Harvey
Author/Illustrator: Maria Kalman
Lexile Level: AD600L
I chose this book based on the true story of the fireboats that came to help put of the fires after September 11th, 2001. I believe there is a great deal of importance in educating young students on our nation’s history, and Fireboat helps broach a sensitive topic in a way that is appropriate for younger children.
For this learning activity, students will be tasked to draw their version of what a ‘hero’ is. After the class has completed their drawings, students will present their images to the class and explain why they chose their hero.
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.4 Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.6 Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification.

Goal: Students will be able to understand that acts of heroism can come from those not typically written about or seen in literature or films.
Objective:
(Psychomotor)Students will be able to draw an image of what they consider to be a hero.
(Cognitive) Students will be able to relate their reasoning for choosing their hero audibly to the rest of the class.
(Affective) Students will recognize and identify values that they admire in heroic figures.
Outcome: Students will gain a deeper appreciation for the historical
significance of those who stepped in to help during a national tragedy.
