Hatchet

Hatchet
By: Gary Paulsen

Grade: 5
Lexile: 1020L

Summary:
Many of us face daily struggles, but what if your struggle was to live in the desolate wilderness, search for edible food, clean water, and shelter from potential dangers?  It was just an ordinary day for Brian.  He was traveling to see his father in Canada on a private plane-just he and the pilot when things took a turn for the worst.  Brian finds himself in a terrifying situation when his pilot suffers a heart attack and Brian is forced to land the plane himself.  His only option is to land in a nearby lake.  Miraculously, Brian survives.  The question remains, how will Brian survive without any food, any water, and worst of all, completely alone?  How will Brian be found?  Will he ever be found?

Possible Learning Activity:
In this activity, students will make a stained glass summary of the book, “Hatchet”.  The students will break a piece of white paper up into 6 “summary sections” as well as one large section for the title (7 total).  After every 3 chapters, students will take the most important details and create a summary.  Students should include a visual picture of some sort as well.  The students can color their work at the end of the assignment or as they go along!
