Isabel of the Whales

Summary

Growing up on Cape Cod, Isabel learns to love whales. During a whale watching excursion, Isabel falls overboard and experiences something she could never have believed. Isabel turns into the thing she loves the most, a whale. While she missed her human family, she grows to love her whale family. As Isabel learns how to be a whale, she develops a close relationship with one of the young whale. Isabel and Jessaloup develop a close bond and Isabel can not imagine leaving him. In the end, Isabel does need to return to her human life but is then torn between two worlds. This is the first of two books.

Goal

Students will learn factual information about whales

Objectives


Students will be assigned one type of chose one type of whale to research. Students may use a variety of resoucrces, nonfiction books, internet or articles.

Students will identify three important facts about that type of whales.

Students will share three important facts about that type whales.


Outcome

Students will create and design an informational poster that includes the type of whale, three facts, and any relevant pictures.


Procedure


Students will be broken into small groups. Each group will be assigned a different type of whale. Using various research methods (nonfiction and appropriate websites), each student will identify three facts about their assigned whale. Students will then share the three facts they found with their group. Each group will create and design an informational poster that includes the type of whale, all the facts they found, and any relevant pictures.
