dePaola, Tomie. Marianna May and Nursey. The Trumpet Club, 1992.
Learning Activity:
The teacher will share the book Marianna May and Nursey with a kindergarten class. The teacher will explain before reading that there is a problem in the story, and that many people will try to solve it.
The teacher will read the story aloud, asking children to look for the problem, attempts at solving, and final solution. Students will be asked to raise their hands when they think they hear one of these. The teacher will stop and discuss these shares. Then the teacher will read the story once more.
Students will be asked to complete a graphic organizer that shows illustrations of the different major people in the story, in the order that their ideas come up. Students will be asked to cut out each illustration and place it in the correct order. Students will then add words underneath to describe what has happened (the problem, how each tried to help, the solution).
Students will share these with a partner before pasting, and discuss why they think their answers are correct and if they left something out.
Standards
With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story.
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and add details to strengthen writing as needed.
Goals
Students will be able to recognize that stories have a usual sequence; problem, possible ideas, and a solution. Students will notice that many times the first solution does not work.
Objectives
Students will be able to follow grade level expectations (raising hands) to discuss a read aloud and their responses with classmates. (Psychomotor)
Students will be able to complete a graphic organizer where they correctly sequence the events in the story. (Cognitive)
Students will be able to describe each illustration/event in the story using correct spelling. (Cognitive)
Outcome
Students will be able to listen to a read aloud and follow expectations for participating in discussions. Students will be able to complete a graphic designer following the sequence of the events in a story, using a description of each event.
