Summary


This is a story written in poetic verse about a young girl, May, living on the Kansas prairie. May’s parents send her to work on a neighbor’s farmstead. Due to unforeseen events, May is left alone and must find a way to survive. As days turn to weeks and weeks turn to months, May is determined to save herself and in doing so, she learns what is important to her.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.3: Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character's thoughts, words, or actions).

Goals

Students will be able to describe why a poem can be both seen and heard using examples from a book in verse.

Objectives:

Students will be able to cite an example from a verse novel where they can see and hear the dialog or narrative.

Outcome:

Students will write an essay or draw a picture to illustrate a passage in the story that they see and hear.

Procedure

After reading the book, May B, the students will watch a video, Poetry 101, by the author. One important point that was made during the video was that Poetry should be seen and heard. Ask the students to think of the book, May B and find one or two examples where the reader can both see and hear the story. Students will then write a short essay explaining what they see and hear or they can draw a picture of what they see and hear in their chosen.
