The Ugly Duckling is about a duckling who is born to a mother duck and five duck siblings.
He looks very different from his brothers and sisters, so much that everyone thinks he is ugly.
Everyone except his mother treat him cruelly, even his siblings, until one day he cannot take
the mistreatment any longer and he leaves in the night without saying goodbye. He struggles
to find his place in the world and wanders through the country lost for a while. Will the ugly
duckling ever find love, acceptance, and peace?
Lesson for 3rd graders:
Students will listen to a reading of The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen and Jerry
Pinkney. Then they will do a crossword puzzle based on the reading:

Throughout The Ugly Duckling, the duckling struggles to find his place in the world where
he is loved and accepted. Students will learn what it means to find your place in the world
by discussing where in their lives they feel loved and accepted and why. Ask themselves
if they think they make other people around them feel accepted and wanted in their lives
and how. If not, how can they change this? This will be done through a 2-page reflection essay
where they will answer the above questions and give an example of how they would respond
to seeing a new student in their school who seems to be struggling to fit in and make friends.

Learning Standards:
CCRW (Grade 3):
1. Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.

structure that lists reasons.
b. Provide reasons that support the opinion.
c. Use linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect opinion
and reasons.
d. Provide a concluding statement or section.

Learning Goal:

writing assignment, they will reflect on their own character to also learn about themselves
and the type of person they each want to be.

Learning Objectives:
1. Students will use the reflection essay and the reading to evaluate their understanding
of themselves and how they treat others and how they would want other people to treat them.
(Cognitive).

feelings of being accepted and loved and how they would treat others to make them feel the
same way (Affective and Psychomotor).

essay and come to have a better understanding of their character.
