A Picture Book of Christopher Columbus by David Adler gives a lengthy background about
Christopher Columbus’s life and how he came to sail for the Americas. It discusses his determination
to find financial backing for his voyage, which was not easy, and the many years it took him to
complete his mission due to setbacks and his crew getting discouraged. The rest is history that is
taught in classrooms around the world!
Lesson for 3rd Graders:
I will read A Picture Book of Christopher Columbus by David Adler to the class.
Students will look at a map of the West Indies (in Google Maps on the Chrome books) and we will

Students will answer questions about the reading in the form of a 2-page essay:
1. What country was Columbus born in?
2. What led Columbus to want to sail on his voyage?
3. Who gave him the money and ships for his trip?
4. What are the names of his ships and how many of them were there?
5. What year did Columbus set sail on his voyage to the Americas?
6. How many trips did Columbus take?
7. How do you feel about traveling around the world in a ship?
8. Do you think that you would have the determination that it would take to be successful with your
mission?
9. If you were to plan your own voyage, how would you plan it? Where would you go and why?
Who would you take with you and why?
10. How would you feel about being away from home and your family for months while you are on
your voyage? Do you think it would be worth going anyway?
Students will paint a picture of what their ship would look like if they sailed on their own voyage
around the world.

Students will engage in a learning activity about Christopher Columbus, his voyage, and write about
their own hypothetical voyage around the world.

1. Students will think, plan, and write about their own hypothetical voyage while using their creative
writing skills in an essay. (Psychomotor and Cognitive)
2. Students will describe how they feel, through an essay, about being away from their home and
family for months if they were to take a voyage like Columbus did. (Affective)
Outcome:
Students will write about their knowledge of the reading and their own imagined voyage around the
world which will utilize their creative writing skills, imagination, and knowledge of the lesson.
