Calil, Davide. Snow White and the 77 Dwarfs. Tundra Books, 2015.
Lexile Level: 540
Book Selling Tool: Poster
Summary:This is a fun spin on the well-known fairy tale. Snow White runs away from her evil stepmother (the witch) and is sees dwarfs, just like in the original. However there are not 7 but 77 dwarfs who help her and take her in. Her life is much more challenging than expected; taking care of 77 dwarfs, making them lunch, combing their beards. Later she meets her evil stepmother again who offers her the typical red apple and Snow’s choice takes the plot in a surprising turn!
Goal:Students will recognize that stories are often rewritten in other ways and show different perspectives of the same characters. Students will start to notice that characters within the same story often have different points of view.
Outcomes: Students will listen and discuss two versions of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. With a partner, students will compare and contrast the Snow White and 77 Dwarfs in the newer version. Students will independently create a bookmark that shows ways that the two versions are different, on respective sides of the bookmark.
Objectives:
Students will be able to discuss facts about the Disney Snow White with their partner, speaking in a polite tone and taking turns. (Affective, Cognitive)
Students will list three details (actions or feelings) to show the point of view of the 77 Dwarfs and three to show the point of view of Snow White in the new version. (Cognitive, Psychomotor)
Students will create a bookmark to compare the versions of Snow White, including three important differences on each side. (Cognitive)
Students will be able to give feedback to their partner by following the process of “glow” and “grow”. (Cognitive)
Learning Activity:
The teacher will ask second grade students if they know the story of Snow White. As many will want to answer, the teacher will have students work in pairs to try to retell the story together with as much detail as they can. The teacher will briefly discuss how Snow White feels very differently than the evil stepmother.
The teacher will explain that the version of the story they know is just one of many different versions of the story. The teacher will explain that now they will get to hear a different version of the story that focuses more on the dwarfs and Snow White. Students will listen and follow along with the story. Students will again work with their partner to fill out the Point of View chart (attached) for the 77 Dwarfs and Snow White. Students will be asked to include at least 3 details for each (actions or feelings of the character) that shows their point of view is different.
The class will return to the familiar version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, together reading the Disney version from (http://dopey1937.disneyfansites.com/english011.html) on the Smart Board. Students will be encouraged to use expression when they are called on to read. The class will discuss what they notice is different in this version. Students will then independently create a two-sided bookmark, with each version of the story on one side. Students will be asked to include at least three details on each side which are different (the teacher will give suggestions to choose from: Setting, Dwarfs feelings/actions, Snow White’s feeling/actions, Evil Queen feeling/actions etc.). Students will be able to include illustration on both sides. Students will share their bookmark with their peer and give one “glow” (a positive remark) and one “grow” (a suggestion to improve) to each other.
