Summary: This is a story about a young Homer Figg
setting off to follow his brother into the thick of the Civil War. Through a
series of fascinating events, Homer's older brother has been illegally sold to
the Union Army. It is up to Homer to find him and save him. Along the way, he
encounters strange but real people of that era: two tricksters who steal his
money, a snake-oil salesman, a hot-air balloonist, and finally, the Maine
regiment who saved Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg and won the war
for the Union.
Book Review: This book is a great find for reluctant
readers. It has very funny moments and funny names, and Homer is sure to win a
reader’s heart. It talks about Civil
War, Battle at Gettysburg and slavery, which are all very important topics in
US history. It is not going to leave anyone indifferent. This book will be a
great addition to a unit on Civil War.
Activity: Students will be working on a poster representing
a character from the book. First, students
will read the book and pay attention to the characters’ behavior. Then they will
pick one character and write everything they know about him or her. Afterwards,
they will draw a picture of what the character might look like based on how the
book describes them. They will put the
drawing on a poster paper and either write or type the info about their person
underneath the picture. At the end, the students will present their posters to
the class.
Variation: A different approach would be to assign the
students a character, or pick two or three students per character to avoid many
children doing the same character.
Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.9.A Describe in depth a character,
setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text
(e.g., a character's thoughts, words, or actions).
