The book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is a classic children’s book. The lexile level is about AD460 because it is typically read by an adult to a child. This book should be read to children because it would not be an easy read for a child of that age. This book would be enjoyed most by children ages 3-5 because of its colorful pictures and the way the pages are created to flip multiple times to reveal more of the picture. Children ages 3-5 would be introduced to the creativity of Eric Carle and would most likely enjoy his other, very famous, books.
There are endless learning activities that could be created with this book. Teachers could have students learn about the life cycle of different animals and use this book as a gateway to the caterpillar’s life cycle.
Learning Standard: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
Goal: Students will understand the life cycle of a caterpillar.
Objective: Students will be able to list the life cycle of a caterpillar on a sheet of paper.
Outcome: Students will know the life cycle of a caterpillar.
