Learning Activity
Students will read the text in whole group or guided reading groups. Students will follow Eryn and Nick throughout the story, and examine how each responds to major events (new information learned). They will complete a three column graphic organizer providing at least 5 events (major information)in the story in the center, and each character’s responses/reactions on either side (one column for Eryn and one column for Nick). Students will support their reasons with evidence from the text.
Students will determine, based on their research, which character they believe had a better response to the events in the text, and compile an overall list, including their details from the graphic organizer.
The class will have a debate between those who chose each character. Students will share their ideas by following grade level debate expectations (raising hands, waiting they turn). Students will be given an opportunity to write down any information which they feel is useful on a note taking form.
After the debate, students will write a summary of the debate, including major points shared by each side, and their final character choice (which may have changed).
Objectives
Students will be able to record five important events in the text and how each of the main characters responded to the event.
Students will be able to use evidence from the text to support their descriptions.
Students will be able to create a bulleted list of all of their points, including evidence and quotations where needed.
Students will be able to follow grade level expectations for participating in a debate.
Students will be able to write a summary of the debate, including main points made from each side, and their final character choice.
Goals
Students will be able to recognize that characters often have a different point of view of the same event, and will respond differently.
Outcomes
Students will be able to complete a graphic organizer, including the main events in the story and how the two main characters responded to each. Students will determine who responded better and participate in a debate to share their view. Students will write a summary of the debate and their final argument.
Standards
Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).
Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
Summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence.
