Summary:  August was born with a facial deformity that has made making friends very difficult for him. For years, he would be homeschooled until one day mom finally decides to take him to a public school.  Being a new kid and having a disability have prevented Auggie from feeling accepted and likeable.  But at the end, his hard work paid off and the whole school applauded him in a standing ovation. Fact is: Auggie doesn’t just have an extraordinary face but is also one smart, caring, and extraordinary kid!
Book Talk: Usually, one book is going to have different reactions from different people. But I think Wonder had something for every person who reads it because it has many themes. This is a great book for children in a lot of ways and one of them is teaching them empathy. Another couple of themes are anti-bullying, peer pressure, family values, self-worth, etc.  It is interesting to read at times and sometimes sad (when he was talking to his mom saying how ugly he thinks he is) and after checking out the trailer for the movie, I think it will become another popular family movie. Mom was a really strong and life smart individual and their dad also reminded me of mine: always cracking jokes. So this book is sure to evoke many emotions from its reader and it’s a must to read for anyone who cares not just about himself.
Activity: After we finish reading the book, the students will be asked to think about their most likeable or memorable place in the book, that really stood out to them. They have to explain why they chose a certain place in the book also. Then, go over the parts of a good essay: beginning, middle and end and what goes in which sections. Model the essay with picking a theme and elaborating on it. Give out paper and pencils and circle around, making sure they use proper grammar, correct structure and complete sentences. Students will receive a rubric to go with the paper.
