Title: Yellow Star

Based on the story of Syvia, a young girl forced to hide in a hole
in the cemetery, Yellow Star is a startling account of a young girl’s
trials after the Nazis forced Jews from her area of Poland into the Lodz
Ghetto.
For this learning activity, students will write about the
importance of color (notably, the yellow star itself) in the text in a one to
two paragraph response.
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.1.A Introduce a topic or text clearly,
state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which ideas are
logically grouped to support the writer's purpose.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.7 Analyze how visual and
multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text
Goal: Students will be able to identify key motifs and images when
examining a work of historical nonfiction.
Objectives: Students will work identify colors and symbols in Yellow
Star.
Students will be able to write 1-2 conscice paragraphs detailing
the importance of color and imagery.
Outcome: Students will develop a deeper understanding of how
images and symbols can be impactful to the overall meanings of a text.
