- Numeroff, Laura, and Felicia Bond. If you give a dog a donut. Scholastic, 2011.
Numeroff, Laura, and Felicia Bond. If you give a mouse a brownie. Balzer Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, 2016.
- See Video Click Here
- Props: Donuts, Cup, Apple juice container, a baseball, a small toy bat, small kite, apple
- Telling the Story: In my video, I have a read aloud of the If you give a dog a donut. However, I would start the story hour off by reading If you give a mouse… (cookie or brownie version). From there I would have the students guess and be interactive with the book. Once I get to the If you give a dog a donut, I would then get the puppet out and reenact the story as we go. I would have a paper bag by my chair and pull the objects that go along with the story, like the donuts, cup, apple juice, and etc. After acting out the second story with puppet, on the tables will be apple juice and donuts for the students to eat. If the students do not want a donut, they also have the option of apple slices, to go along with the story. The students would then have a picture of a puppy from the book on the table. They will have to draw one part of the story they remember. They will have crayons, construction paper, glue, and other craft items. I will give the students one example to go on.
- Standards:
Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.
Goal: Students will be able to use creative measures to recall and express details from a story.
Objectives:
- Students will feel more comfortable retelling parts of a story. [Students will be asked throughout the book what they think is going to happen next or to recall what happened to the class.]
- Students will use crafts to express their knowledge of the story. [Students will use construction paper and other craft items to draw out one scene that was their favorite from the book.]
- Students will use their prior knowledge to guess next step of main character in a story. [Students will guess by verbally telling the teacher as they leave the room what they think is going to happen next. Exit Ticket]
Outcomes:
Student will use a craft to demonstrate what they recall from a story.
