Possible Learning Activity

Students will compare and contrast two characters, Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge from James and the Giant Peach.  Students should use as many descriptive adjectives to portray similarities and differences.  They will use the descriptors to write a compare/contrast essay.

Standards
R.4.3
Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character’ s thoughts, words, or actions).
W4.4
Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1–3 above.)
W4.5
With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1–3 up to and including grade 4 on page 38.)

Goal
Understand how to use a compare/contrast chart and use it to develop a coherent essay


Objective
Students will learn how to use adjectives to describe two different characters from the book, create a compare/contrast chart, and transfer their information into a compare/contrast essay.

Outcome
Students will have a completed compare/contrast chart as well as an essay to demonstrate their understanding of the book
