Summary
In August 2003, this science fiction novel was published. This novel is part of the Ember Series, which has three additional books titled The People of Sparks (2004), The Prophet of Yonwood (2006) and The Diamond of Darkhold (2008).
This novel is about a girl named Lina, who likes to travel throughout the city of Ember. Unfortunately, the city is facing due to the failing power and power shortages. Linda finds an ancient paper of instructions, that explains how to fix the electricity. However, the paper is missing letters. This book focuses on Linda's journey of discovering the meaning of the paper in order to solve the mystery of fixing the falling city's power and discovering the secrets that the city holds. Through the help of Doon, a friend who works for the City Works, she seeks to solve this mystery.

Students will create a basic circuit board using materials supplied, that works to power an object, in order to understand the importance of how electricity impacts the city, within the novel. (Psychomotor and Affective).
Learning Activity
This activity will focus on students creating a circuit board in order to understand the basic concepts of how electricity is conducted in order to power an item. In addition, students will engage in a discussion about the importance of electricity and the effects of its absence in society and their individual lives. A rubric will be used to assess this activity.
