Summary:

In August 2016, this science fantasy novel was published, which received a Newberry Medal Award in 2017. This novel is about a girl named Luna, who is taken from her family as a part of a traditional child sacrifice ritual conducted by in the Protectorate. Luna is saved by a witch named Xan, who raises her.  Luna obtains magical powers, when being fed the silvery honeyed moon beams. Her magic is bound until her thirteenth birthday.

I would recommend this novel for older middle-school aged students due to some of the content. Your students will be excited and ready to read a book that immerses them in a world that possesses magic, witches, swamp monsters and dragons. This novel will focus on Luna's journey as she learns to control her power and protect the people closest to her.

Learning Goal

Students will identify the story elements of the novel (e.g. setting, plot, characters, conflict and theme) and possess the ability to summarize the important parts or an aspect of  the text and create a storyboard. By utilizing a storyboard, students will create their interpretation of the novel by learning to utilize the coding program, Scratch.

Learning Objective

Students will identify elements from the novel titled The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill, and create a story by utilizing Scratch, a coding program, in order to create their interpretation of the story elements within the novel.

Learning Activity

This activity will gain an introduction to coding through the program, Scratch. Then, students will retell the story form the text titled The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill by utilize Scratch, in order to create their interpretation of the text. A rubric will be used to assess this activity.

Learning Outcome

Students will gain knowledge in basic coding skills and utilize their creativity to draw connections to the book titled The Girl Who Drank the Moon by: Kelly Barnhill, by focusing on its setting, plot and theme.
