Greene, Carol. Christopher Columbus: A Great Explorer. Childrens Pr, 1989.
Lexile Level: 540L
This
book was originally published in 1989 and features a relatively
balanced portrayal of Columbus. It establishes right from the start
that Columbus came from a relatively quiet background. He is praised
for his desire to distance himself from the family trade of weaving
in order to become a sailor. Columbus is also portrayed as an
intelligent, courageous man, who was willing to push himself, and his
crew, as hard as possible, in order to find what he was looking for.
In this, he is also portrayed as a tyrant, driven by greed and a lust
for money and power. As a result, this book acknowledges Columbus'
bold, courageous side, whilst simultaneously coloring him as an evil,
ruthless man. I think this is more or less the "correct"
way to portray him, as it is clear that he left a tremendous amount
of chaos and tragedy in his wake. I would definitely include this
book in my library, it reads well, with a number of fantastic images
and captions describing the contents of those images.
