Title: Mooove Over!: ( A book about Counting by Twos)
Author: Karen
Magnuson Beil
Illustrator: Paul Meisel
Read-alike: Eggs and Legs: Counting by Twos (Know Your
Numbers) by Michael Dahl
Lexile Level: 510 L
ISBN: 9780823417360
Genres: Easy Fiction, Science and Math
Age: 4-7 yrs.
Big Idea: This
book is about one incident that happens to the animals on the bus. One day, the
bus animals were pushed out of the bus by the cow who just couldn’t find a
comfortable spot. The driver got out and saw all the animals on the roof and
was like: what?? You got to find out by yourself what happened after but you’re
not going to be disappointed. Children love this story, when I act it out and
chase them out of the “bus”, (a few chairs.) You and students will definitely
laugh through the story and have a great time acting it out after. Plus, they
will practice skipping by twos.
Activity:
After
reading the book, students will sit in chairs and make it look like they are on
the bus. I will “come in” and pretend to be a cow, finding too little room
everywhere I sit ant telling the students to move over, using some dialogues
from the book. Correct the students along the way if they got up by one or
threes. Make sure they know the names of the animals they are representing. At
the end, everyone will chant 2, 4,6,8,10,12, 14, 16, 18, and 20. This is a
great story also because there are 20 animals that are allowed on the bus (cow
is 21) which goes perfectly with kindergarten math standard of counting to 20.
Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.2
Count
forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of
having to begin at 1).
Goal: Students will learn how to count by twos.
Objective: After reading the book, the teacher will act
out a story with the students moving out of the chairs by twos. (S)
Outcome: Students will have a visual example to help their
understanding skip counting to 20.
Selling Tool: Book mark
